Natural or conventional cosmetics? The main differences and what we need to know.
Choosing a cosmetic product is not always easy. Packaging, ingredients, certifications and different terms often create the impression that we have to choose between «natural» and «chemical» cosmetics.
In reality, however, the term "chemical cosmetics" is not scientifically accurate, as every cosmetic product — natural or conventional — is composed of chemicals. The essential comparison mainly concerns the origin of the ingredients, the way they are processed, and the overall philosophy with which each composition is designed.
What do we mean by the term "natural cosmetics"?;
Natural cosmetics are based to a significant extent on ingredients of natural origin, such as vegetable oils, herbs, plant extracts, essential oils, clay and other ingredients derived from nature.
This does not mean that these ingredients are always used exactly as they are found in nature. Many of them require purification, extraction or other processing before they can be safely and stably incorporated into a cosmetic product.
Therefore, the word "natural" alone is not enough to assess the quality of a cosmetic. What matters is the overall composition, the origin and quality of the raw materials, the concentrations in which they are used, and the control of the production process.
What are conventional cosmetics?;
Conventional cosmetics can contain both natural and synthetic ingredients. Synthetic ingredients are created or modified in a laboratory environment and are used, among other things, for the stability, texture, preservation or specific function of a product.
The synthetic origin of an ingredient does not automatically mean that it is dangerous or of inferior quality. Similarly, natural origin does not in itself guarantee that an ingredient is suitable for every skin type.
All cosmetics legally placed on the European Union market must comply with specific safety requirements and have undergone scientific evaluation before being released.
Natural doesn't necessarily mean suitable for everyone
One of the most common mistakes is the perception that every natural ingredient is automatically mild and suitable for everyone. Certain plant extracts, fragrances or essential oils may not be suitable for particularly sensitive skin or for people with specific allergies.
For this reason, we shouldn't choose a product just because it's labeled "natural." We need to consider our skin type and needs, the product's purpose, the list of ingredients, and its instructions for use.
In cases of sensitivity or a history of allergic reactions, it is preferable to test on a small area of the skin and, when necessary, seek the advice of a dermatologist.
What are the main differences?;
The main differences between natural and conventional cosmetics are:
- the origin and processing of raw materials,
- in the design philosophy of the composition,
- the ingredients used for preservation, texture and aroma,
- in the method and scale of production,
- the shelf life and storage conditions of the product,
- in the quantity and type of packaging.
Neither the natural nor synthetic origin of an ingredient is sufficient in itself to prove its quality or effectiveness. What matters most is the correct composition, suitability for the intended use, and responsible production.
The same applies to the environmental footprint. Natural origin does not necessarily mean a lower environmental burden. The cultivation and origin of the raw materials, processing, transportation, packaging and the possibility of proper management after use must be considered as a whole.
What should we consider before choosing a cosmetic?;
- The real needs of our skin. Not all products are suitable for everyone.
- The ingredients list. The name and packaging are not enough to understand the composition of a product.
- The production manager. We need to know who produces or distributes the product and whether it operates with organized control procedures.
- Instructions for use and storage. Proper use affects both the safety and preservation of the product.
- Advertising claims. Absolute expressions such as «completely harmless», «suitable for everyone» or «zero environmental footprint» require special attention and adequate documentation. Cosmetic product claims must meet, among other things, the criteria of truth, documentation, honesty and fairness.
Our philosophy at Focus-Thrace Cosmetics
At Focus-Thrace Cosmetics we choose to create natural cosmetics and handmade soaps using vegetable oils, olive oil, herbs and carefully selected raw materials.
Our company was founded in Alexandroupolis in 2017 and our production is carried out in small batches. This way we can carefully monitor every stage, from the selection of ingredients to quality control and packaging.
We apply a Good Manufacturing Practice System for cosmetic products, certified according to the international standard ISO 22716:2007. For us, the natural origin of ingredients must be accompanied by knowledge, consistency, traceability and a responsible production process.
We do not believe that a product is good just because it is labeled «natural.» We believe in the correct selection of raw materials, careful composition, and honest consumer information.
